Local Window Treatment Experience in Carefree
Two decades of building under one plat name is the fact that shapes every Carefree quote. The sections run from CAREFREE 2ND SEC to CAREFREE 18TH SEC PART 2, at least 18 of them, so a house on Easy Street and a house on Nonchalant Court can be a decade and a half apart in construction even though both say Carefree on the deed. That's unlike the six year production subdivisions around it. We don't carry a measurement from one section to another, and we don't quote a Carefree package. At 704 parcels this is the biggest single plat we work in Greenwood, and it contains meaningfully different vintages of window.</p><p style="font-size:16px;color:#4a5a6a;line-height:1.75;margin:16px 0 0">The stock itself is 1970s and 1980s ranch, split level and tri level, with modest two story houses mixed in, so opening counts land between 10 and 16 rather than the 18 to 24 you'd find in the newer Center Grove plats. What you get instead of arched transoms and great room walls is a large fixed picture window in the living room, aluminum framed sliding units, sliding patio doors on the back, and bay windows added during later remodels. Values sit below the Greenwood average of $304,000, which is the other Carefree oddity: 1970s prices inside the Center Grove Community School Corporation.
We have served Carefree homeowners through the full range of window treatment needs, from inspections and repairs to full replacements. Whatever the system, our Greenwood crew approaches every project with clear communication and respect for your property.
Carefree housing stock: 704 parcels, 18 sections, one plat name
No builder is recorded for Carefree in any source we could reach, and the county parcel layer carries no developer field, so we don't name one. What the parcel data does give is scale and shape. There are 704 parcels whose legal description begins CAREFREE, which includes any common areas or outlots platted under the same name, so the occupied house figure runs slightly lower. Lot size isn't published: the ACRES attribute is null for this plat, so anyone quoting you a Carefree lot size is guessing. The plat is curvilinear with cul de sacs rather than a rectilinear grid, which is why so many of its 16 recorded street names end in Court or Way.
Architecturally this is ranch, split level and tri level with some modest two story traditional, consistent with a late-1960s through 1980s build era, though the era itself is inferred from the section numbering rather than from a year built record. Johnson County publishes no year built attribute in its public parcel layer. Home size isn't sourced either. What we do know is durable: 40 to 55 years of settlement on Johnson County clay, single story and split level plans with rooms lit from one side, and a front elevation now sitting under mature canopy that the newer plats toward Stones Crossing Road don't have yet.
What Carefree windows do: picture windows, sliders and settled openings
Carefree runs 10 to 16 openings per house, which is a smaller schedule than the two story plats nearby and changes what the money should be spent on. There are no arched heads, no palladian gable assemblies and no two story great room walls in this community, because all three postdate the stock. The shapes that do repeat are a large fixed picture window in the living room, aluminum framed sliding units, a sliding patio door on the rear elevation, and bay windows added in later remodels. A bay is three separate treatments and three separate measurements, not one, and remodel bays rarely share a depth with the original openings beside them.
Depth is the recurring problem on Easy Street and Lazy Lane alike. A 1970s house with an insert fitted inside the original frame loses inside mount depth right at the insert, and the return is often too shallow for a standard headrail without a spacer. Houses still on their original aluminum sliding units present a different and usually shallower profile again. Then there's settlement: 40 to 55 years on Johnson County clay puts 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of out of square across a single opening as a matter of course, so we take three widths and three heights on every one and build to the smallest of them.
Eighteen sections, at least two vintages
The legal descriptions run from CAREFREE 2ND SEC to CAREFREE 18TH SEC PART 2, so this community built out over about two decades. A late-1960s section and a 1980s section carry different trim, different opening sizes and different depth behind the stop. We measure the house in front of us and note the section, because the next Carefree job on the same day can be twelve years newer and take a different headrail.
The insert eats your mounting depth
This is the single most common surprise in Carefree. An insert fitted inside the original frame reduces the usable return at exactly the point a headrail needs it, so a 2 inch blind that fits in the bedroom may not clear in the living room. A cellular headrail is the most forgiving option. Where nothing clears, an outside mount on a deco frame covers the trim line and looks deliberate, rather than a shade standing proud with a light gap on both sides.
The living room picture window
Wide fixed glass is the signature Carefree opening and it needs decisions a small window doesn't. A wide roller tube needs a center support bracket, and the fabric weight changes how the clutch behaves. Roll direction matters too: a reverse roll brings the fabric closer to the glass and hides the tube, but a reverse roll is not compatible with a fascia, so that choice gets made before the order rather than at install.
Canopy in front, open sky behind
Carefree has 40 to 55 years of tree growth now shading its front elevations, which the newer Greenwood plats built on former farm ground do not. The plat is curvilinear with cul de sacs, so orientation varies lot to lot and cannot be generalized from the subdivision name. Practically, we walk the house and check which rooms take low sun at 5pm in July, when Indianapolis averages an 85.2F high, rather than assuming from the street.
What we specify in Carefree, from Tranquil Trail to Happy Hollow Court
The Carefree brief is different from the newer Center Grove plats: fewer openings, wider ones, shallower returns and openings that have moved. So the products that work here are the ones that forgive a settled opening and handle a wide span, not the ones designed around a two story glass wall. With 10 to 16 openings per house, doing the whole house at once is realistic here in a way it isn't in a 24-opening plan, and it solves the dye lot problem before it starts. Fabric runs vary between production batches, so a shade added to the same room a year later can read as a slightly different color. Custom work runs $250 to $2,600 per window nationally, shutters $175 to $800, with a 2 to 5 week lead time.
Composite plantation shutters
The strongest answer for 40 to 55 years of settlement. A shutter frame is square in itself, so an L-frame or Z-frame absorbs the 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of out of square that a Carefree opening typically shows, and the taper disappears behind the frame instead of showing along a bottom rail. Composite handles the humidity of an Indiana summer better than hardwood, which matters over a kitchen sink. National shutter pricing sits between $175 and $800 per window.
Vertical blinds and panel track
Nearly every Carefree house has a sliding patio door on the rear elevation, and a vertical stack is still the honest answer for one. Vanes rotate for light and draw off to one side, so the stack back sits over the fixed panel rather than in the traffic path, and a wand replaces a cord. Panel track does the same job in wider sections of fabric if you want fewer lines across the glass. Both get measured for stack back before the order, not after.
Roller shades
The living room picture window is where a roller earns its keep in Carefree: one clean line across a wide span, no ladder strings, no slat dust. Wide tubes get a center support bracket and we check the clutch against the fabric weight. Decide roll direction up front, because a reverse roll sits closer to the glass and hides the tube but can't be used with a fascia. Openness factor is chosen room by room, since orientation on this curvilinear plat changes lot to lot.
Carefree streets, Smokey Row Road and Center Grove schools
Carefree sits in White River Township, ZIP 46142, west of US 31 in the Center Grove area, off the Smokey Row Road corridor. The street names are the local landmark: Easy Street, Lazy Lane, Nevermind Way, Ramblin Road, Tranquil Trail, Nonchalant Court, Elbow Bend Boulevard, Happy Hollow Court and Primrose Path all sit inside one plat. Residents give directions by street rather than by section number, and they search that way too. Schools are Center Grove Community School Corporation, confirmed by the parcel field SCHOOL_DIST returning CENTER GROVE COM on every sampled parcel, with the Center Grove Elementary attendance area serving the plat and Center Grove High School at the top.
